Sensei Keiko Fukada was a judo black belt who was told she must give up her sport once she was married. Instead she left her home country of Japan and came to the United States. She fought tirelessly against the sexism that kept her from higher degrees of black belt. Finally, at age 98, she was awarded the title of Grand Master, or 10th degree black belt, joining three others in the world, all men. She continued to teach Judo from a chair until her death in 2013 at age 99.
